半纏「下大津」／

HANTEN - Livery coat

下大津は長崎県の港に面した町でしょうか。

良い感じに着こなされた風合いの半纏です。

半纏の中でも印半纏は背中の印で、着ているだけで、

その人がどの組に属しているか、

どこのお店の出入りの者か、あるいは

どんな職業の人間かを一目で分からせるものでした。

特に火消し半纏は火事場で、火を消すという任務が

間違いなく、効率良く行われる為に重要な

目印の役目を果たしていたようです。

大工、鳶、左官、植木屋、八百屋、魚屋、など

職人達が背中に江戸文字で自分達の職業や屋号を染め

粋に着こなしていました。

'Hanten' was a Japanese padded

cotton Workman's uniform.

Carpenters, plasterers, gardeners, grocers,

and other craftmen proudly dyed the name of

their group, store, or occupation in Edo-Moji

(calligraphy from the Edo period).

This identification was essential, particularly

for the fire fighters to enable them to carry out

their work efficiently.

We can imagine the deliberate care taken with this one

from the tone left by his wife's gentle washing

and handling.
